Preparing For Cool Weather
Yes, technically it’s still summer, but we all know that Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. While many regions of the U.S. will see warm temperatures well past Labor Day, it’s never too early to start preparing your properties for cooler temperatures. Getting a jump on seasonal preparations will also reduce the likelihood of being caught unprepared by an early winter storm.
While some tasks will need to be completed closer to the winter months, there are many that can be done in September, including the following:
- Adjust your watering schedule. As even the hottest areas begin to finally cool down a little, now is a great time to adjust your sprinkler system to reflect the shorter days and cooler evenings.
- Begin a property audit to check all of your units or single family homes for cracked windows, inadequate insulation, and torn weather-stripping. By beginning the repairs now, they’ll be completed long before the cold air hits. It’s also easier to make these repairs while the weather is still relatively mild.
- Check heaters and boilers for any leaks and make the necessary repairs now. This will potentially save a lot of time, money, and perhaps untimely repairs during the winter season, when emergency service is considerably higher priced. This is particularly important if your region is prone to late fall or early winter storms.
- Begin to prepare your landscaping for fall and winter. This can include anything from removing dead plantings to cutting dead limbs off of trees.
- Check roofing for potential leaks and ward them off by repairing them before they leak. Incessant rain or built up snow levels can seriously damage the structure of any roof, and doing the repairs now reduces the likelihood of leaks in the middle of a storm.
- If you have an outdoor pool, you should consider draining it in the next few weeks, clean it and cover it. This will eliminate the possibility of falling leaves getting into the pool and the drainage system.
- Check fireplaces in all units. This includes making sure that a critter of some sort has not taken up residence in the chimney. Checking and cleaning the flue also eliminates the possibility of smoke damage from a poorly maintained fireplace.
While there are probably many other things are your list to get you ready for cooler temperatures, completing even a few of these is definitely a good start.
