The state Senate passed legislation Tuesday making a series of changes to laws governing tenants and landlords.

Dems hammered the legislation — which passed 18-15 along party lines — on a number of fronts, with Sen. Jon Erpenbach, D-Middleton, arguing it is “tilting the playing field toward the landlord.”

Erpenbach added the bill would lead to more evictions, though concerns about potential evictions of crime victims were addressed in a floor amendment with bill author Frank Lasee, R-De Pere.

The Senate also backed changes to the civil service system, an overhaul of the state’s lemon law, and two bills relating to hunting.
